What is an EIN?

An EIN is a business tax identification number used by the IRS. Follow current IRS guidance for application methods and required information. Entity formation and EIN matters are separate steps.

Build an entity record file

  • Formation documents and ownership chart
  • EIN notice and classification documents
  • Contracts, platforms and bank records
  • Expenses, owner funding and related-party records

Assign responsibilities

Identify who gathers documents, reconciles books, follows state matters and communicates with tax professionals. Keep the EIN notice securely; do not disclose full records on public pages or unfamiliar channels.

Before the first close

Confirm the starting period, accounting system, transaction categories and document handover so the records consistently identify the same entity.
